The Complete Lawn Care Guide for Hamilton, Burlington & the GTA
Maintaining a lush, healthy lawn in Ontario's climate takes more than an occasional mow. OSS Lawn Care has provided professional lawn care across Hamilton, Burlington, Oakville, Mississauga, Toronto, Vaughan, Niagara, Brantford, St. Catharines and Caledonia since 2022. In this guide, our team shares the same expert techniques we apply every day on residential and commercial properties throughout the Greater Toronto Area.
Why professional lawn care matters
Ontario's four-season climate presents unique challenges for lawn health. Cold winters, unpredictable spring frosts, humid summers, and dry spells all stress your turf in different ways. A lawn that looks green in June can quickly thin out, develop thatch build-up, or become overrun with weeds by August without a proactive maintenance plan.
Professional lawn care services — including regular grass cutting, fertilizing, core aeration, overseeding and weed control — work together as a system. Each service reinforces the others, creating a compounding effect that produces a thicker, greener and more resilient lawn season after season.
6 essential lawn care tips from our experts
1. Mow at the right height
Never cut more than one-third of the grass blade at a time. Keeping grass at 3–4 inches encourages deeper roots, improves drought resistance and naturally crowds out weeds.
2. Water deeply and infrequently
Water your lawn 1–1.5 inches per week, ideally in the early morning. Deep, infrequent watering trains roots to grow downward, producing a more resilient and drought-tolerant lawn.
3. Aerate every season
Core aeration removes plugs of compacted soil, allowing air, water and nutrients to reach grass roots. Annual aeration in spring or fall dramatically improves turf density. See our full guide on when to aerate for timing.
4. Fertilize on schedule
Apply a slow-release nitrogen fertilizer in early spring and again in late fall. Avoid over-fertilizing in summer heat, which can burn grass and promote disease.
5. Overseed thin areas
Bare or thin patches invite weeds. Overseeding in early fall — when soil is still warm but temperatures have cooled — gives new grass time to establish before winter sets in.
6. Control weeds early
Apply pre-emergent herbicide in spring before soil temperatures reach 10°C to prevent crabgrass and other common weeds. Spot-treat existing weeds with targeted post-emergent products.

Spring
Rake out winter debris, apply pre-emergent weed control, overseed thin areas and begin your fertilizing schedule. Early spring is also the ideal time to schedule a core aeration treatment. See our spring cleanup checklist for the full sequence.
Summer
Maintain a consistent mowing schedule — typically every 7–10 days — and raise your mower deck slightly during heat waves. Deep watering two to three times per week will keep roots cool and hydrated.
Fall
Fall is the most important season for lawn investment. Aerate and overseed, apply a high-phosphorus winterizer fertilizer and clear fallen leaves promptly. Our fall lawn prep guide walks through the full process.
Winter
Avoid walking on frozen grass, which damages individual grass blades and creates bare patches come spring. Apply an ice melt product that is safe for turf near walkways.
